Blog: STAMMAFest — What a ride…

Vee, our Network & Campaigns Lead and, as it turns out, hard-hitting saleswoman and fundraiser — for those who weren't at STAMMAFest Global she ran the merch stand (from which we still have a few items left to buy) — tells us about her STAMMAFest experience.

It's been such an incredible few weeks since STAMMAFest Global, our conference in Liverpool. So many emails are coming in from people either looking for a group to join or setting one up and wanting to replicate the STAMMAFest-feeling of community. Engagement is much higher and in short people are keen, and the stammering world has been shaken up! And I love it! 

I wanted to share a few of my highlights from the conference and I hope I can convey them in a manner that leaves you half as emotional as it's been for me.

Over the summer I met a 17-year-old on Zoom, who contributed to the session we were having via the chat function rather than speaking. I met her in person on her first day at STAMMAFest. Shy and introverted, she seemed nervous and overwhelmed by so many people in attendance, and didn't talk beyond an initial "Hello". And THEN: On the last day, she stood up in front of 120 people and spoke at the Open Mic event. I couldn't believe how transformative STAMMAFest had been for her. The Vice-Chair of our Board of Trustees and I, who were sat together, started applauding and banging on the table in front of us to make noise for her. I think I cried a little, I was so overwhelmed how within a couple days she gained the confidence to grab the microphone in front of so many people. Well done her! I will never forget this. 

Another emotional one: one of the group leaders I work with super closely in my role handed me a card and a little chocolatey gift on the last day as a thank you for involving me in so many projects and groups. I couldn't read the card before I got on the train, I knew I would cry. My heart was so full, even days after the conference. Thanks to all those who attended and who I was able to listen to and chat with. You all made this event as strong as it was. 

There were many more goosebump moments.

STAMMAFest has shown me how important my role is for people who stammer. Finding a place to get together with like-minded people and feel understood, and having a safe space to share experiences and feelings in a non-judgemental way is important for everyone — stammer or not. But especially for those who might face difficult situations in their stammering journey, or feel they are held back by it. It can be freeing to speak to someone who can relate to those feelings and maybe provide some useful advice.
