Strategy: Space To Stammer

STAMMA's strategy for 2024-2027.

We're reaching the finale of the 5-year plan. You can download the full report below.

Background

Our 'Space to Stammer' strategy is both a mundane and an ambitious plan, but one we think is achievable.

Our aim is to create a culture where consideration for people who stammer, whether socially, in education or at work, is normal, akin to checking for wheelchair access and providing braille.

The reason? So that stammering is seen as unremarkable, just a fact; a way some people talk. Something to be thought about when it comes to customer service, oral exams or online banking, for example.

Campaigns

We'll do this through our award-winning campaigns.

For instance, our 2023 campaign around making GP appointments worked well because so many people responded to the survey we sent out. Your stories really helped us to identify issues and come up with solutions.

When we showed health authorities the data and the stories you gave us, the response we got was a forehead-smacking "Of course! So what do we need to do to change this?" It'll take time, but the information and guidance is now out there.

Using this as a blueprint, over the next few years we'll systematically target selected industries and show them what needs to change, based on your feedback.

In 2024, we focused on coffee shops, another huge challenge for people who stammer. We sent our guide to all the major coffee chains, with recommendations to increase inclusivity in their stores. Read more about our coffee shop campaign.

Phone call nightmares

Our current campaign is to End The Phone Call Nightmares. We made a great advert and poster, and we're holding a series of online workshops to help organisations make phone calls inclusive. Get involved and help us change the world for people who stammer.
