Strategy: Space To Stammer
Our strategy for 2024-2027.
We've reached the finale of our 5-year plan that we laid out in 2018. You can download the full report below. At our AGM in Birmingham this November, Jane Powell presented STAMMA's new 3-year strategy, 'Space to Stammer'.
It's both a mundane and an ambitious plan, but we think achievable.
Our aim is to create a culture where consideration for people who stammer whether socially, in the marketplace, in education or at work, is normal, akin to checking for wheelchair access. So that stammering is seen as unremarkable, a fact, a way some people talk. Something to be thought about when it comes to, say, oral exams, customer service or online banking.
STAMMA's campaign in 2023 around making GP appointments worked well because so many people responded to the survey we sent out. Your stories really helped us to identify issues and come up with solutions.
And when we showed health authorities the stories we were sent and the data we received, the response was a forehead-smacking "of course, so what do we need to do to change things?". It’ll take time, but the information and guidance is now out there.
Using this as a blueprint, over the next three years we'll systematically target selected industries and show them what needs to change, based on your feedback. Starting with your experiences when buying coffee. Throughout 2024, we have sent our guide 'Stammering & Coffee Shops', which you can open here or download below, to all the major coffee chains, with recommendations to increase inclusivity in their stores.
