Stammering & Medication
Find out if there are medications or drugs that can help with stammering.
At present there are no drugs or medications in the UK to reduce or cure stammering, or stuttering. Stuttering is what other parts of the world call stammering, but it's the same thing.
Certain things help some people but there isn't a universal approach that works for everyone. Nothing has been approved by the Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
Some research suggests that certain drugs may have an impact on stammering. This includes things such as risperidone. However, many of the medications being currently explored are anti-psychotics or atypical antipsychotics. These can have negative side-effects with long-term use. Further research is needed to understand the impact of these medications.
CBD oil
We sometimes get asked about using Cannabidiol (CBD) oil for stammering. We are aware of anecdotal accounts of some people who say CBD oil helps with the anxiety associated with stammering. But there is currently not enough clinical data available. So, we can't recommend it as a course of treatment.
We suggest that if you are interested in using CBD oil, talk to your GP. Do as much research as possible. The market for legal cannabis-derived products is comparatively new in the UK. Products currently have not been independently tested or uniformly labelled. See which.co.uk for information on CBD oil, the labelling of CBD products and consumer protections.
