Blog: Caution - Inkheart on Netflix

15th December 2022 (updated 19th December 2022)

Our web editor Steven flags up a family film with a dubious portrayal of stammering that's just been added to Netflix.

If you have children, you'll no doubt be looking for films to keep the young ones entertained this Christmas. If you are the parent of a child who stammers, you might want to think twice about watching one particular title that's just been added to Netflix, called 'Inkheart'.

Rated PG on its cinema release in 2008, Inkheart is a fantasy film based on a series of children's/young adult books by Cornelia Funke and boasts a stellar cast including Brendan Fraser, Helen Mirren, Paul Bettany and Jim Broadbent. It also stars John Thomson (Cold Feet) as a character called Darius, who stammers. Darius is only a minor character and isn't on screen much, but his stammer is instrumental to the film's plot. And not in a wholly positive way.

With a bit of a summary (no spoilers), Inkheart tells the story of Mo, played by Brendan Fraser, who is a 'Silvertongue' — someone who can magically bring book characters to life just by reading aloud. A group of villains Mo accidentally brought to life from a book ten years previously have banded together and are now using Darius, another Silvertongue, to bring more literary baddies to life in a bid for world domination (as you do).

Darius is seen as worthless to the baddies because he stammers; to them he's faulty and useless just because of how he speaks.

We're introduced to Darius about 20 minutes in, when the baddies capture Mo and take him to their lair. Their leader, Capricorn (Andy Serkis), explains that as Mo speaks fluently, he intends to use him to replace Darius as his 'reader'. The 'problem' with Darius is that because he stammers whilst reading aloud, the characters he brings to life are not 'brought out properly'; they're not fully formed and have defects – one character comes out as mute, another has a snub nose and they all have text sprawled across their bodies, like pages spat out from a broken printer.

Darius is made to read aloud to demonstrate this problem they have with him. When he inevitably stammers, Darius is cruelly mocked by Capricorn in front of everyone, drawing a sneering laugh from his henchmen (watch the clip below).
