Date/time range
Tuesday 22nd October 2019 2:00pm

Event at SOAS University of London for students who stammer & staff, to mark International Stammering Awareness Day (ISAD).

Dates & times: Tuesday 22nd October, 1pm-2:30pm

Venue: SOAS University of London, 10 Thornhaugh Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1H 0XG

SOAS University of London will be holding an open event with stalls and talks to mark ISAD.

Deborah Johnston, Pro-Director Teaching and Learning, says, "There are particular issues for students who stammer - between 1-3% of student population - in a world in which speaking fluently is seeming to be increasingly important in employment, but also in academic interactions through assessed and non-assessed presentations and oral tests.

'The activities on the day seek to give information to students who stammer on how to navigate these challenges, and may be useful to others who have communication disorders or anxieties.

'We also hope this will be helpful to those students and staff who want to know how to be supportive of people who stammer."

Programme

  • 12.30pm-2.30pm: an information stall in the Cloisters with material on stammering, employment and wellbeing, and advice about sources of support.
  • 1pm-1.30pm: a talk in the PWW Atrium by two people who stammer on the ways in which stammering has affected them and how they respond to the challenges:

Suzana Kalcic is a person who stammers and a former president of King's Speakers Toastmaster Club, a specialist club for people who stammer or have social anxiety. She is currently in the development stage of producing her own podcast.

Brian Skelton. At the age of 51, Brian went on a course at the Starfish Project, which changed his life. His passion is helping other people who stammer, and he regularly goes back to help out on the Starfish Project. He's also a member of King's Speakers Toastmasters club.

The event is being held in conjunction with Birkbeck University.
