My Stammering Child Video
25th October 2022
STAMMA's Catherine Woolley went along the launch of a new animated video that explores the concerns parents can have when their child starts stammering. Here she tells us all about it.
Back in 2018, speech and language therapists (SLTs) from Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust collaborated with Artlink Hull to create 'My Stammering Tap', an award winning video which explores what it is like to be a child who stammers. This year they returned with 'My Stammering Child', created in partnership with My Pocket Films and Action for Stammering Children.
The 3-minute film, which you can watch above, puts the perspectives of parents of children who stammer centre-stage by exploring the concerns they might have and what they can do to help their child who stammers. The film is narrated by young people who stammer and was shaped by the input of focus groups and surveys with people who stammer and their families.
On Friday, 21st October, the short film was premiered at a live event Hull Minster which was also livestreamed online. Special guests at the event included TV personality Nick Hewer (President of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists), Ria Bernard (CEO of Action for Stammering Children), Helen Rutter (author of the book 'The Boy Who Made Everyone Laugh' and Sir Michael Palin (Vice-President of Action for Stammering Children).
After the video's screening, there was a live Q&A where members of the focus groups alongside SLTs and the film's creator spoke about how the video was designed and created. The mood throughout the event in Hull Minster was celebratory, with people wanting share the video worldwide with SLTs, teachers, parents and more!
