Black History Month

To mark Black History Month, ex-STAMMA Trustee Sibon Phiri introduces our content for October and encourages you to get involved.

Black History Month in the UK takes place every year in October. During this month organisations, educational institutions and the media highlight the historical events that have impacted the lives of black people in the UK and across the globe; paying homage to trailblazers, notable and prominent black figures; celebrating the achievements that have occurred over the years leading to progress and change; as well as recognising the influence and contribution those of African-Caribbean descent have had in shaping British culture.

I believe black history is British history and something that should be taught in history classes in all schools as part of the national curriculum, instead of just a week or month long focus once a year. Britain would not be the country it is today if it had not been for the millions of men and women from former British colonised countries (which makes up what we know as the Commonwealth today) risking their lives to serve this country; leaving behind their homes, culture and loved ones to help rebuild Britain after the Second World War.  

Throughout October, STAMMA will be sharing experiences and stories of black people within the stammering community, and celebrating their achievements... But just as teaching black history shouldn't be limited to just one month, nor should this.

As this month has been fought for and recognised in the UK since 1987, we should continue to use this time to celebrate, educate and inspire many. Throughout October, STAMMA will be sharing experiences and stories of black people within the stammering community, and celebrating their achievements. Stay tuned for a month of inspiring stories and interesting facts in our Your Voice and news & features sections and thought-provoking conversations on social media.

But just as teaching black history shouldn't be limited to just one month, nor should this. We want to share these stories all year round and we want you to help us do that — tell us about your experiences and achievements as someone who stammers, to encourage and inspire others on their stammering journeys. Share your art, music, poetry; write an opinion piece or just vent about something stammering-related. See our Share Your Story page to find out how.

STAMMA is an inclusive charity that champions and celebrates diversity. An organisation I am proud to be part of and would like to see more people from all walks of life access the services available as well as supporting the work the charity does to reach out to more people who stammer. A stammer does not discriminate. It does not target a particular race, gender or social class. So neither should the society we live in.
