New poll results show that more people are recognising STAMMA.

Summary

Based on YouGov public polling, recognition of STAMMA and what we do has increased from 2% in 2018 to 21% in 2025.

Thanks to our eye-catching campaigns and our appearances in the media, the results show that we're cutting through, making an impact and putting stammering awareness in the public consciousness.

Background

Back in 2018, when Jane Powell took over as CEO, we started carrying out polls to help us gauge how aware the general public is of our charity. That way, we can track how well we're doing over the coming years.

Using YouGov, an internationally-recognised market research organisation, we put a series of questions to a cross-section of the UK population with a weighted balance of age, gender, area and other demographics.

In our first poll in November 2018, the year before STAMMA was officially launched, we gave people a list of organisations some real and others made up and asked which ones they had heard of. Overall, 2% said they had heard of the British Stammering Association (BSA), which is what we were called back then.

In 2019, the year we launched STAMMA, we put the same question to the general public, this time adding our new name to the list of organisations. Results showed that 4% had heard of the BSA and 1% had heard of STAMMA. The following year, those figures were 2% and 1% respectively.

Growth

We shook things up a bit in 2021, putting a different question to the public: 'which one of the following do you think STAMMA is?' The list of options included an energy pill, a brand of clothing, a charity for people with back problems, a fitness magazine, a charity for people who stammer, a running club, a 90s band, a national farmer's club, or other.

10% of respondents picked out a stammering charity from the list. In 2022, that figure fell to 8%. We didn't carry out a poll in 2023, but when we polled again in 2024, it leapt up to 19%.

The latest figures, based on results released in November 2025, grew further still, showing that 21% of the general population recognise STAMMA as a national stammering charity.

Campaigns

Hopefully our latest campaign to End the Phone Call Nightmares contributed to the increased brand awareness, with advertisements going out on digital billboards at bus stops and train stations, and in cinemas across the UK in October. A huge thanks to JC Decaux UK and Pearl & Dean for making this happen. And to creative agency Iris Worldwide for the ad itself.

Help us grow even further: become a STAMMA member (for free), get involved with our latest campaign, and share our posts on social media to help spread the word about STAMMA.
