About STAMMA

STAMMA, The British Stammering Association, is a small, award-winning charity with big ambitions working with a brilliant community keen to create space and respect for people who stammer.

Stammering has historically been used to evoke humour or suggest inadequacy. Little wonder that many who stammer face daily ignorance, discrimination and disrespect. This can affect job prospects, mental health and cause social isolation. It can result in making a GP appointment a nightmare, stop you accessing a service altogether and leave you feeling disbelieved. We're here to change that.

We have a clear strategy for the next three years to achieve real and practical change for people who stammer, in the workplace and as consumers, and showcase the inadvertent barriers they face. We want to reach more people who stammer and grow our base, but to do that we need to expand our Training and Advocacy services and underpin our whole range of support services.

We believe we're on the cusp of creating real and long-lasting change. Help lead this.

VACANCY

We want to appoint a new Trustee to the Board with significant skills and experience in fundraising. You'll need to share our excitement and ambition for change. It is not essential that you stammer. This is an unpaid position but travel expenses can be covered.

Trustee terms are for three years, and you will be expected to attend all Board meetings. These take place up to six times a year, usually on a Saturday. They can be in-person at different locations across England, or online. There are also sub-committees and informal planning and preparatory discussions, usually held online.

Trustees Responsibilities

  • To develop and agree our long-term strategy.
  • To ensure compliance with governing documents and regulations.
  • To ensure that resources are spent in accordance with our Articles of Association.
  • To set goals and assess performance.
  • To ensure that the organisation is run efficiently and is financially stable.
  • To protect the charity's assets and ensure surplus funds are properly invested.
  • To manage the appointment, supervision, support, appraisal and remuneration of the CEO.
  • To uphold STAMMA's values.

FUNDRAISING

We are looking for someone with a significant background as a senior charity fundraiser, with a sound understanding of fundraising at a strategic and operational level. We are particularly looking for experience in mass participation events, community or online fundraising.

While the charity has been going since 1978, for most of those years we were sustained by government grants and membership fees, and recently legacies. Over the last five years, we've grown our support base from around 1,000 to over 6,000. We're looking for someone to advise us on how best to leverage that support.

You would support the Board with your insights around fundraising techniques, best practice and suitable strategies for small charities. You would advise, support the CEO and the staff team in delivering practical fundraising strategies and events to meet annual targets. And ensure that fundraising activities reflect the values and culture of STAMMA, is legal, and adheres to industry best practice.

This is an appointed rather than an elected position. For an informal conversation about this role, please contact paul.fix@stamma.org
