Harnaik Gill shares lyrics for a song he wrote about growing up and living with a stammer.

Hi, I'm Harnaik and my hobby is to write lyrics. I have been writing for about 30 years and would love to one day become a successful lyricist. 

I wrote this set of lyrics They copied my stutter, which I worked on for a long time, rewriting them many times over until I was happy with them. They have been well received by friends and family and other stuttering groups. 

A friend of mine put music to my lyrics using AI and it sounded very good. I would still like to put music to the lyrics properly, so I'm working on that.

They Copied My Stutter

I was disappointed with people
It was fair to say 
With people who didn't stutter 
They would use their words to hurt me 
They would push into my skin 
Like they were holding a needle 
As they tried to mimic me 
They copied my stutter 

Verse 1 

Growing up with a stutter 
I could hardly complete a sentence 
The teacher would say slow down 
Let the words come out slowly 

I had my boyhood heroes  
Bruce Lee was one of them
Nothing seemed to break him 
He fought hard and lived his life holy

I had a big family  
I hid my pain deep inside 
I didn't want them to see 
How much it beat me to my knees 

I know everyone struggles 
They don't always tell someone 
I couldn't find the right person 
To tell them I wasn't at ease

I read somewhere if you sing 
You don't stutter, so I sang 
I picked up the microphone 
It's true, I didn't stutter 

So when I was on stage 
I sang to everyone who knew my song 
They came from everywhere
They didn't know I had a stutter

I saw my stutter as a friend 
Not many people would have 
We have many similarities 
I couldn't name just one 

So when it came to the end 
I could make sense of my life 
I tried real hard to get it right 
I knew I wasn't done

I wish I met a mugger 
Who would take my stutter 
I know that would make me feel better 
If only they'd steal my stutter 
I would pay them good money 
If I didn't stutter
