The STAMMA Minecraft Club

Sections

An online club where young people who stammer (also known as stutter) can play Minecraft together.

Does your child stammer? Do they love playing Minecraft? Are you based in the UK? If so, why not encourage them to join the STAMMA Minecraft Club?

At our regular online gaming sessions for ages 7 to 14, they can play the popular video game whilst meeting and talking with other young people who stammer. It's a chance to make new friends and design creative new worlds, guided by our game hosts.

What happens at meetings?

Each session has up to ten young people joining and lasts for about an hour.

During sessions, we might:

  • work together on a longer 'big build'
  • work in smaller groups or as individuals to complete short building challenges
  • play mini-games as a team.

An adult is present at all times. For more on safety, read the 'keeping people safe' section below.

What do I need?

There are two versions of Minecraft: Bedrock and Java. We play using the Bedrock edition because this can be played on a range of devices: XBox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, PC laptop, iPad or tablet.

PCs can play both Java and Bedrock versions of Minecraft. Therefore, if you are playing on Windows, Mac and Linux we recommend checking before sessions that you are playing the right version so that you can get into the Realm.

If you aren't sure which version of Minecraft you are playing on a PC, you can check by opening your Minecraft Launcher. There you can also switch between the two versions of the game. Unfortunately, Minecraft Bedrock is not available on iMac.

Please note: to access our club world game in Realms from a console, you will need the online game pass, eg XBox game pass or PS Plus or Switch Online. If you join Realms from a tablet, iPad, PC or laptop then you don't need anything else extra.

You will also need a second device to join a voice/video chat through Zoom.

Keeping people safe

We want our Minecraft Club to be a safe space for everyone. We ask our members to be safe, honest, respectful, kind and helpful. We know that if 'griefing' happens (when someone irritates or upsets another player), most of the time it's because of a misunderstanding or inexperience.

In our sessions there will be game leaders present to support your child and help to keep them safe. If you or your child sees something that doesn't seem right, let the game leaders know so that they can help. You can also email us after the session if you have any concerns at familysupport@stamma.org

We have a code of conduct that we ask everyone at Minecraft Club to follow and you can download it below. Please share this with your child and talk it through with them (if appropriate) before their first session.

Volunteering for the Minecraft Club

Watch STAMMA's Children & Families Programme Lead Catherine chat below about what an average session at our Minecraft Club looks like, and our hopes for the future!

Watch Finn, aged 8, talk below about what the club means to him.

For Finn, our Minecraft Club is much more than playing a game. It's a place where he can meet other children who stammer, feel accepted and be himself. As he puts it,

It makes me feel like I'm not the odd one out."

If you'd like to support our Minecraft Club, and help more children make friends and build their confidence, we'd be so grateful if you would consider donating to support our work. Please click the button below if you'd like to make a donation.
