Changes for Stammerers runs courses in Winchester teaching a technique introduced through guided relaxation exercises.

*Please note: this course is new, so doesn’t yet have the weight of anecdotal evidence that the other courses have.

What does it do?

Established in March 2025, Changes for Stammerers teaches a diaphragmatic/abdominal breathing technique (different to 'costal breathing'), introduced through relaxation exercises which supports speech control and confidence.

Courses also cover areas including:

  • how words are formed
  • creating a positive mindset and positive self-talk
  • self-acceptance
  • fear & anxiety reduction.

Techniques are practised in real-life speaking situations (with support).

What ages is it for?

This course is for adults aged 18+.

Upcoming Changes for Stammerers courses

What happens on a course?

Running over three and a half days, each course is kept to a maximum of 10 people to allow everyone to be involved and supported.

On the course, a diaphragmatic/abdominal breathing technique is taught through guided relaxation, helping members become aware of their breathing, as well as where they may be holding stress or tension within the body. Through guided relaxation, members learn techniques aiming to control stammering, create calm and improve awareness.

Each full day starts at 8:45am and finishes around 5pm–5:30pm, with regular breaks throughout the day. After an evening meal together members return for drinks and social time. This is not compulsory, but everybody enjoys the opportunity to continue conversations, practise the technique in a relaxed social setting and feel supported by the group.

Commitment

This course teaches a technique rather than a cure, so ongoing practise is important. Participants are required to fully commit to the experience and give themselves the time and space to focus on themselves and their learning.

Where are courses held?

Courses are held at a 4-star hotel in Winchester.

Who delivers the course?

The course is delivered by Heidi Bristow, founder of Changes for Stammerers. Heidi is a person who stammers and has a diploma in Professional Relaxation Therapy. Read more about Heidi and her experience on their website.

How much does it cost?

The Changes for Stammerers membership fee is £675, which includes the first course and ongoing support (see the next section). This fee does not include accommodation at the hotel, which needs to be paid for separately (all booked via Changes).

Alternative payment options and support for payment arrangements can be made.

What else is included?

  • A members' resource bag containing a handbook, progress journal and other items to support the technique and tools.
  • Ongoing membership support following the course (access to refresher courses, weekly online support groups, online relaxation sessions, telephone and video call support, support resources via the members hub).
