Would you like to volunteer for STAMMA but have some questions? Hopefully this page of frequently asked questions (FAQs) will help.
General questions
How can I volunteer for STAMMA?
It's simple! Just fill out the application form on our Volunteer With Us page.
What types of volunteer roles are available?
We offer a range of volunteer opportunities depending on our current projects and needs.
These may include helping at events, supporting programmes or services, reviewing books, administrative support, fundraising activities, or helping raise awareness about our work.
Do I need any specific skills or experience to volunteer?
No, most of our volunteer roles do not require specific skills or prior experience. We welcome people from all backgrounds and provide guidance where needed.
If you do have particular skills or expertise, we would also love to hear how you might like to use them to support our work.
Is there an application or selection process?
Yes. We'll ask you to complete a short application form so we can learn more about your interests and availability. Some roles may also involve an informal conversation or additional checks, depending on the nature of the work.
Can I volunteer if I don't stammer?
Absolutely. Our team of volunteers is made up of people who stammer, parents and family members of children and people who stammer, speech & language therapists and therapy students.
Time & flexibility
How much time do I need to commit?
This varies depending on the role. Some opportunities involve regular weekly volunteering, while others may be one-off events or flexible roles. We aim to work with your availability, so volunteering can fit around your other commitments.
Can I volunteer if I only have limited time?
Most of our volunteer roles require basic training and onboarding, which will take time to complete.
If your time is limited, we would be happy to explore other opportunities to get involved with STAMMA's work, such as one-off volunteering opportunities.
Can I volunteer remotely or from home?
Yes, some roles are suitable for remote or home-based volunteering, such as on our helpline services. Other roles are in-person, for example at our STAMMAFest and Family Day events.
Training & support
What training will I receive?
We'll give you comprehensive online training, which will welcome you to STAMMA and equip you with all you need to know. Our training is broken down into bite-sized modules that you can complete at your own pace.
You will also receive specific role training and close mentoring from volunteer supervisors.
What support will I receive?
You will have a designated supervisor and further support from the Volunteering Lead. You will receive supervision, which will be tailored to each volunteer role, but may include:
- Weekly or monthly meetings with peers and supervisors
- One-to-one supervision
- Yearly supervision to support professional and personal development
- Scheduled check-ins with the Volunteering Lead.
Eligibility & Inclusion
Can I volunteer whilst claiming benefits?
Yes, you can volunteer whilst receiving benefits, as long as you continue to meet the conditions of the benefit you get.
Can I apply to volunteer if I am a refugee/asylum seeker?
Of course! We welcome anyone who can meet the screening steps for the role that they are applying for.
I have a disability/support needs. Can I still volunteer?
Of course, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that welcomes all volunteers. We aim to support you where possible with any accessibility requests and requirements, to the best of our ability and within STAMMA's means.
I have a criminal record. Can I still volunteer?
Having a criminal record will not automatically exclude you from volunteering at STAMMA. We will take into account the nature of the offence(s) and the role applied for, and have a further conversation with you to find a role that suits you best, in line with our requirements.
I don't live in the UK. Can I become a volunteer?
Most of our volunteers need to be UK-based for data protection purposes when accessing our records and systems.
Any volunteer role that works with children or vulnerable adults must be UK-based for DBS vetting. If you live outside the UK, we will be happy to discuss how you can get involved.
Do you support visa applications?
Unfortunately, STAMMA is not able to support VISA applications.
Students
I'm looking for a student placement as part of my studies. Can I volunteer as a way of doing this?
Educational courses that require students to undertake placements are not considered volunteering. We may be able to support you in securing a placement with STAMMA, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.
Safety
Do volunteers need a background check?
We ask all volunteers to complete a few simple onboarding procedures as part of our safeguarding commitment. This includes: obtaining a reference, a simple address check, confirmation of unspent convictions.
In roles where volunteers work alongside children or vulnerable adults, we will also obtain an enhanced DBS check. STAMMA will support volunteers to complete this procedure, and will pay for the DBS check.
If you still have questions, email us at volunteer@stamma.org and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.
