Book review: Skye's Song

Speech & language therapist Katherine Brown reviews the new book for young children Skye's Song, by Katie Day.

Skye's Song is a children's storybook about Skye, a bird whose voice sometimes gets 'stuck' or 'bumpy'. When this happens, Skye feels self-conscious and doubts himself, and so he silences his voice, even when he really he wants to join in. 

Poor Skye is confused and despondent, and seeks condolence in a trusted bird who reassures him and explains that it is a good thing to be unique — the world is wonderful because of all the differences. The bird explains that it is the differences in the seasons, nature and weather that make our world amazing, and that we should celebrate all the differences in people, too. So, Skye starts to believe in himself and learns to accept his voice, joining in with his fellow birds, proudly singing in his own special way.

The message that shines through is extremely clear: having a different voice is not a bad thing, it is part of the beautiful tapestry that makes up that individual.

This book is primarily aimed at children in early-years education. The language includes some non-literal descriptions, which may need explaining to younger children, and the rhyme fluctuates a little, but most importantly, the message that shines through is extremely clear: having a different voice is not a bad thing, it is part of the beautiful tapestry that makes up that individual. This book could therefore be a resource for parents of a young child who stammers, or reading material for any child, encouraging acceptance and understanding of diversity.

The 'Five great things about me' space at the back of the book is a lovely way to identify a child's skills or virtues and would also be a good starting point for further conversations about differences in people, and big feelings such as pride or insecurity. The illustrations are sweet and would appeal to young children.

Katie Day, the author, has experience of parenting a child with a stammer, and her message about celebrating differences in individuals is imperative. There is a wave that has started for young people, which encourages them to be their best and unique selves. This kind of positivity can not only unlock an individual's full potential but can also produce a valuable butterfly effect, and this book, with its gentle story and powerful message, is definitely part of that movement.
