There are lots of speech & language therapists (SLTs) in the private sector who work with people who stammer. Private therapy isn't cheap, so you might find these reviews from STAMMA members useful if you're exploring options for private therapy.

Child therapy

Karen Fenton (Watford & remote)

karenfentonslt.com

"We cannot recommend Karen highly enough. She has completely changed the way we view and support our son's stammer, and the impact she has had on our whole family has been incredible. Even after our very first phone call, I felt as though a huge weight had been lifted. For the first time, I felt understood, reassured and hopeful. Karen has been like a warm hug throughout this journey. Her calm, compassionate and reassuring manner has given us confidence and completely changed how we support our son.

'I would recommend Karen to anyone, especially parents who are feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to turn. She doesn't just support the child — she supports the whole family. We are so grateful we found her, and she has made a difference to our lives that we will always be thankful for."

Nicola Barraclough (Hertfordshire/Cambridgeshire & remote)

"I have found therapy with Nicola over the last six months invaluable. I have kept my stammer to myself and my immediate family for the most part of my life. However, I am so pleased to have had support and help from Nicola with acceptance of my stammer. Nicola has been so helpful and supportive from understanding the reasons for the negative thoughts that I had experienced, to strategies to help me accept my stammer as part of me. Throughout this process, the sessions have helped my understanding, my perspective, addressed my values and, all in all, have been instrumental to me moving forwards in a more positive direction."

"I started speech therapy at 35 after never receiving proper support, and Nicola made the whole experience feel safe and empowering. With complex needs including CPTSD and ADHD, I came in carrying a lot of shame around my interiorised stammer. Nicola's person-centred, kind and holistic approach helped me open up, challenge my beliefs, and gradually let go of fear and embarrassment. She truly met me where I was and created a space where I felt understood. Nicola is an excellent speech therapist, and I look forward to working with her again."

Kevin Fower (Central London & remote)

"I wanted to recommend my therapist, Kevin Fower. I went to him for an assessment and six sessions in 2022, and I found him especially helpful. He is based in London, although he does offer remote sessions too. I found him helpful because he did not do any of the traditional speech therapy that I had done before, which focuses on speech modification, but he really helped me to delve into the emotional impact of my stammer and uncover some of my deeply-held beliefs and shame around stuttering."

Sam Simpson (West London & remote)

intandem.co.uk

"I would absolutely recommend Sam Simpson. She is based in Teddington in London, but I had support via Zoom. To say Sam helped to change my life is not an exaggeration. Her kindness, understanding and ability to witness stammering in all its guises is invaluable. I could write volumes on all the ways she helped me, but to put it simply, she just made me feel that I was OK exactly as I was and that I had always been OK. That has changed everything for me. It doesn't sound radical to most people, but to someone who stammers, it can really feel revolutionary. If you're ready to be challenged but supported and heard completely, Sam is perfect."
