Community spotlight: North East STAMMA Support Group
Chris Thebe tells us all about the new support group he's set up for people who stammer for people in the North East of England.
Did you know that there are almost 50 stammering communities and groups across the UK? At STAMMA, we're proud to support these independently run communities, from local groups in Edinburgh and Coventry, to professional networks at the NHS and BBC.
To showcase the fantastic work that is going on, our Community Spotlight series bring groups from all corners of the nation straight to you!
This May, we're hearing from a new group based in Newcastle, the new North East STAMMA Support Group, which has just been set up by one of our very own trustees, Chris Thebe.
STAMMA: Hi Chris. What made you start your stammering group?
Chris: I wanted to start this group because I realised how important local, face-to-face connection is for the stammering community. I wanted to create a 'group' right here in the North East where we can share our experiences without the pressure of having to be fluent.
STAMMA: The North East STAMMA Support Group is brand new. Can you tell us about your plans? What will typical meetings look like?
Chris: Our mission is to provide a supportive space where potential members can build confidence and community. Typical meetings will be informal — think coffee, biscuits and conversation. We might have guest speakers, like a local speech & language therapist, or just hold open 'drop-in' hours for people to chat and socialise at their own pace.
No pressure (it's not work or school) and we will be open to ideas for meeting themes.
I hope to organise an official Open Day soon to reach more people in the community. My goal is to grow the group enough so that we can hold regular events and perhaps even partner with local businesses to raise awareness.
STAMMA: Why do you think people would enjoy joining your group?
Chris: People will enjoy joining because it will be a safe space to be yourself among people who truly 'get it'. It's a chance to build friendships and realise you aren't alone in your journey with stammering.
A place where it is OK to stammer!
STAMMA: What would you say to anyone who is hesitant about joining a stammering support group?
Chris: It's okay to be nervous! You don't have to speak if you aren't ready. Just come along, have a tea and listen — there is no pressure and you'll find a very warm welcome waiting for you.
The North East STAMMA Support Group is a new support community based in Newcastle upon Tyne (serving the wider North East area). If you'd like to get involved, contact Chris at 07570 385283 or email him at chris.thebe@gmail.com
