Community spotlight: Downland STAMMA Support Group
Mads (Madhwesha) Rao tells us all about the new support group he's setting up for people who stammer, as well as anyone wanting to support someone who stammers, in Sussex.
Did you know that there are almost 50 stammering communities and groups across the UK? At STAMMA, we're proud to support these independently run communities, from local groups in Edinburgh and Coventry, to professional networks at the NHS and BBC.
We want to showcase the fantastic work that is going on, and so have launched our Community Spotlight series, where we bring groups from all corners of the nation straight to you!
This month, we're hearing from a new group based in Sussex, the new Downland STAMMA Support Group, founded by Mads Rao...
STAMMA: Hi Mads! Tell us about you and what made you start your stammering group.
Mads: Hi, I'm Mads, I'm based near Horsham, West Sussex, and I have a PhD in engineering & physics for MR scanners. I'm passionate about starting a group to engage with others to create a positive and thriving environment. I strongly believe that by coming together, we can support and empower each other.
STAMMA: The Downland STAMMA Support Group is brand new. Can you tell us about the group and its members? What will typical meetings look like?
Mads: This is a support group for people who stammer or anyone who wants to support someone who stammers, including family and friends, based in and around Sussex.
I strongly believe that by coming together, we can support and empower each other.
We'll share ideas and best practices that can help with day-to-day life, including answering the phone, ordering in a restaurant or a café, meeting new people, attending interviews and other similar tasks that can be overwhelming. The group will not resolve stammering but will be with you all the time.
STAMMA: Why do you think people would enjoy joining your group?
Mads: This support group is there so that we can help each other. I want it to serve as a social and emotional safety net for anyone struggling to navigate their life due to stammering.
People can join if they are feeling lonely, and it will hopefully help them feel connected and that they belong. I want people to know that they are not alone in this journey, and that there are others who are there to help.
The Downland STAMMA Support Group is a new support community open to anyone in the Sussex area. It will meet every month online, and twice a year in person. If you'd like to find out more, email us at communities@stamma.org
