Letters you can download and show to your GP, private therapist or counsellor to help them understand stammering.

Are you looking to get therapy to help with stammering? You can often refer yourself by contacting NHS speech & language therapy services direct see One-to-one Adult Stammering Therapy to find out how.

In some places, though, you might have to go to your GP first and ask them to refer you. Some GPs might not know much about stammering. And if your stammer is less obvious, you might be worried that the GP won't think you need therapy.

If this is the case, download our supporting letter below. It explains that stammering isn't always obvious and lets you describe your own stammer and how it affects you. Show it to your GP so that they can understand.

Private therapy & counselling

We've also got a letter to show to private speech & language therapists or counsellors, if you're looking to go down either of those avenues. Scroll down to download it.

Do you have any questions? Get in touch — chat with us on our free helpline at 0808 802 0002 or start a webchat. Both services are open Monday to Thursday, 10am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm.
