Zoom event on stammering at uni

29th November 2022

An online event from the University of Birmingham for anyone studying or working in higher education who stammers.

The Zoom event 'The hidden voices of people who stutter', on Friday 9th December from 4:30-6:30pm, will focus on how to get support at university if you stammer – either as students, academics or staff members.

Panelists, including Kirsten Howells from STAMMA, will talk about providing reasonable adjustments that can help, as well as how to avoid ableist language.

Organiser Mahmoud Elsherif says, "Our aim is to raise awareness about a group of people who are rarely represented or discussed in disability events and are still ignored and mocked within educational settings. We want to make higher education more accessible and inclusive for people who stammer, promote the idea that they should be included in decision-making when it comes to education, and consider how best to support them to feel heard and respected in academic environments".

Speakers include:

  • Max Gattie, University of Manchester, PhD student.
  • Ria Bernard, CEO of Action for Stammering Children and Speech & Language Therapist.
  • Dr. Claire Tupling, AQA, Research and Development Manager.
  • Kirsten Howells, Programme Lead for Adults at STAMMA.
  • Claire Maillet, Stammerers Through University Consultancy.
